Canto libero (Song of Freedom) is a sound installation commissioned by Telefono Rosa (Turin), curated by Francesca Comisso, for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The soundtrack that can be heard by picking up the handset of the submarine telephone installed on the wall is an interspecies dialogue created by juxtaposing the vocalizations of large cetaceans, such as whales and similar creatures, which seem to respond to the voices of the anti-violence center workers. The artist uses the suggestion of a whale song from the deep sea as a metaphor for the hidden world of gender based violence that can only succeed in emerging and finding the strength and help it needs through attentive listening.
