The Minute Maintenance project, curated by Elisa Fulco and Antonio Leone, is the result of a cycle of workshops for individuals under the supervision of Palermo’s community corrections department (UIEPE), held in 2024 by the artist Marzia Migliora as part of the project Spazio Acrobazie. The installation, presented for the first time at Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo, tells of work’s social function as a common ground between people of different life stories. The artist has transformed the workshops’ words and images into drawings: design sketches for the production of five pairs of overalls equipped for the profession of living, the most difficult of trades.
The idea behind this series of workshop is to keep a diary of our encounters by recording our discussions, focusing the latter on the theme of work as the common element that unites us. Although we all come from different backgrounds and places, from different pasts and presents, we’re all working people. What does work do, after all? Through our abilities, it makes us part of the social fabric. A lot of my artistic projects have been dedicated to this issue because I’m interested in the right to work, in labour security, but also in work’s potential – including during this project – for bearing out our outstanding qualities. What we do best, what we would like to do or what we want to do; if there’s a way to replicate it. Then to reflect on the tools that we use in our work, the amulets that give us or have given us support in times of difficulty. How has our work saved us? What makes up our personal survival kit? Finally, to brainstorm a pair of overalls together, adapted for the profession of living. What material might they be made from? What equipment should they include?
