The work stems from a set photograph taken during the fi lming of the Made in Italy video that shows two maps of Europe, pre- and post-1989, superimposed and encompassed by a planisphere painted in watercolor by the artist. Indeed, the globalization process has made it possible to relocate textile production to countries where labor, oft en female, is exploited in contemporary forms of slavery. Plants from which textile fi bers (cotton, hemp, and other species) are made fl ank the maps on either side, while below the work is populated by various clippings from articles about working women (contemporary reports from Bangladesh and other places, mixed with details extracted from illustrations in Denis Diderot and Jean Baptiste Le Rond D’Alembert’s Encyclopédie), arranged in rows as if in an assembly line.
